2012 KingsWay School Duathlon

The KingsWay School Duathlon is primarily a wider Hibiscus coast community event which promotes fun, physical activity, family and community spirit. This is going to be an exciting event with prizes for the race winners plus a number of superb spot prizes, so mark it in your diary, dust off your running shoes, pump up your bike tyres and get training!

Where: KingsWay School, 100 Jelas Rd, Red Beach
When: Saturday 31 March 2012
Time: Administration opens at 6:30am, 1st race will start at 8am
Who: Years 3-13 students and parents

The Duathlon will include:

Group 1 – Year 3-4 – run 750m / cycle 3km / run 750m
Group 2 – Year 5-6 – run 2km / cycle 3km / run 1.5km
Group 3 – Year 7-8 – run 3km / cycle 5km / run 1.5km
Group 4 – Year 9-10 – run 3km / cycle 5km / run 1.5km
Group 5 – Year 11-13 – run 3km / cycle 5km / run 1.5km
Group 6 – Mums and Dads / Adults - run 3km / cycle 5km / run 1.5km

Parents are encouraged to enter and compete with their children.
PLEASE NOTE: If a parent enters with their child, the parent/guardian MUST be registered (as an adult) in that child’s category to enter that race.
If energy levels permit, mums and dads can also enter the in the adult category, but that would be a completely separate entry (two separate entries).

General Race Information/Rules:

1. The maximum number of entries is 100 participants per race.
2. Races will be started approximately 10 minutes apart at the discretion of the race starter.
3. For each race, the participants will be given a different colour sticker.
3. Parent/child prize winners must come in together and be officially registered in the same race.
4a. To qualify for prizes, participants must complete all the legs – NOT A TEAM TRAVERSE.
4b. Spot prize winners must be present to receive their prize.
5. Participants must time themselves – only the top 10 participants will be timed.
6. Each participant will receive a placing.
7. Every bike and helmet must have a current WOF before it will be permitted to enter the transition area.
8. BIKE ME in Orewa will do a FREE WOF at their workshop. Please ensure that your WOF is done in good time before the event, however BIKE ME will be at the school on Friday 30th March to assist with any last minute emergency WOFs that need to be done.
9. There will be a water point at the transition area, hence there will be no need for water bottles on the cycle track.
10. There will be a coffee van at the transition area from 6:30am if you need a good hot drink to kick start the day.
11. During the run leg on the Estuary track: please keep left at all times, have a ready smile, use good manners and courtesy to other track users because the track is not closed to the public.
12. Have fun!

First Aid:

1. There will a St Johns Ambulance stationed at the transition area.
2. Two certified mobile 1st aiders. One each on the cycle and one on the run leg.
3. Kingsway’s first aid room will be manned for the full duration of the Duathlon and Gala.

Raining on the Day:

There is NO SAVING DAY. If it rains, snows or the wind blows up a storm, the Duathlon will proceed as planned, unless the organisers deem the track to be unsafe or the conditions to be such that it is undesirable to proceed with the event.

Duathlon Prizes:

Only the first 3 places will be timed. 
Note: To qualify for the parent/child prize – The parent/gaurdian must be registered in the child’s category for that race and both parent and child must cross the finish line TOGETHER.

Yr 3/4 category: 1st and 2nd boy, 1st and 2nd girl,  1st parent/child 
Yr 5/6 category: 1st and 2nd boy, 1st and 2nd girl, 1st parent/child
Yr 7/8 category: 1st and 2nd boy, 1st and 2nd girl, 1st parent/child
Yr 9/10 category: 1st and 2nd boy, 1st and 2nd girl, 1st parent/child
Yr 11/13 category: 1st and 2nd boy, 1st and 2nd girl, 1st parent/child
Adult – Male: 1st, 2nd
Adult – Female: 1st, 2nd

3 Major Spot Prizes:

SPOT PRIZE WINNERS must be present at the prize giving to receive their spot prize. If not, the prize will be re-drawn until a winner is found.

Times on the Day:

Administration opens at 6.30am.
Transition area – for bike and helmet drop off – open from 6.30 – 7.30am.
Please note that no bikes are to be dropped off or taken from the transition area until the last race has been completed, therefore please ensure your bike is in the transition area by 7.30am. 

FIRST RACE STARTS at 8.00am.

Cost:

$8 per person or $20 per family (3 or more members of the same family).

• Fill in the registration form (CLICK HERE to download an editable version) and email to Analie Swanepoel at tollie@xtra.co.nz (and pay via electronic banking).

• OR print out the form (CLICK HERE to download a pdf to print) and deliver it to the school office with payment.

PLEASE NOTE: If a parent enters with their child, the adult must be registered in that child’s category to enter that race.
Adults may also enter in the adult race as a separate entry.

• Registrations open on the 27 Feb 2012 and close on 29 March 2012. Please note that there will be no registrations on the day.

Cash Payment
Cash may be dropped off at the KingsWay School Office and must be attached to the registration form and place in a sealed envelope with your child’s name and Duathlon 2012 written on the envelope. Please DO NOT send cash by post.

PRE - RACE DAY:

When: FRIDAY 30 MARCH 2012
Time: 3:30pm – 6:30pm
Where: Kingsway School hard court (next to the old library).

After you have registered for the duathlon you will need to come to pre-race day as stated above (accompanied by an adult) for the following reasons:
1. To receive your registration race number and race sticker.
2. To have your bike WOF and helmet WOF inspected.
3. Your race number will be placed on your bike and helmet.
4. Mum and Dad will be given information about race day i.e. where to park, info on bike transition area, where to get a hot coffee while waiting for the race start etc.

Bike WOF:

WOFs for bikes and helmets are compulsory.
BIKEME in Orewa will be providing bike and helmet WOFs free of charge. You can visit them in Orewa (first set of shops on the corner of Moenui Ave and HBC Highway) OR they will be at KingsWay School (the day before the Duathlon) on Fri 30th March from 3:30pm until 5:30pm.

Declaration and Release Statement:

The Declarations, Release Statements and Race Rules (below) are attached to each registration form.
I agree that in the situation where the event is cancelled due to any “Act of God” or any other circumstances beyond the control of the organisers (KingsWay School PTA), my entry fee shall be non-refundable. In consideration of the acceptance of this entry I hereby agree to the exclusion of liability to the event, the event organisers (KingsWay School PTA), officers, marshals, volunteers, employees, sponsors or any other party associated with the event from all claims for injuries and/or damage however caused (whether fatal or otherwise) and suffered out of participation in this event. I also release and forever discharge the above groups from all actions, suits, proceedings, claims, demands, losses, damages, penalties and fines however arising (including negligence). I agree to comply with the rules of the event and intend competing entirely at my own risk.

Race Rules:
1. All children competing must have their parent’s / caregiver’s permission to enter.
2. All children competing in the duathlon must wear a cycle helmet and race number, their bike and helmet must have a current WOF and race number. 
3. All competitors must keep within the assigned race course. Anyone who moves outside of the assigned course will automatically be disqualified.
4. Cyclists should only be two abreast if overtaking. At all other times cyclists should ride in single file.
5. Cyclists overtaking other cyclists should not do so when passing a parked car.
6. Marshals will be identified by their safety jackets. Marshals will be placed along the race course and their instructions must be followed at all times.
7. Anyone not obeying the Marshals instructions (on the race course and in the transition area) will be disqualified.
8. Common sense and good will should prevail. Anyone acting in an unsafe manner will be stopped and disqualified.
9. Organisers (KingsWay School PTA) with the support of Auckland Transport and Fulton Hogan has made every effort to make sure that safety is maximized. Entry into this event assumes that each participant will take personal responsibility for safe behavior, use common sense and courtesy and will adhere strictly to road rules. (During the bike leg).
10. All competitors must respect other competitors and their belongings by not touching their bikes or safety equipment etc.
11. No-one (except authorized personnel) is allowed in the transition from 7.30am until the last race has finished.
